Deep Purple의 April은

1969년에 발표한 세 번째 앨범

'Deep Purple'에 수록된 곡으로

연주 시간이 장장 12분 10초에 달하는 대작이다

 

T.S 엘리어트의 연작詩

황무지(荒蕪地)에서 영감을 받아 만든 곡이며

전반부에 비발디의 사계(四季) 중 겨울을 편곡하여 넣었다

 

Led Zeppelin의 Stairway to Heaven,

King Crimson의 Epitaph 등과 함께

대표적인 락 클래식으로 꼽히는 곡이다

as it slowly comes awake

So fault the april rain
and the valley's filled with pain
and you can't tell if I cry
as I look up to the

Gray sky where it should be blue
gray sky where I should see you
ask why why it should be so
I'll cry say I don't know

Maybe once in a while I'll forget
and I'll smile
but then the feeling comes again
of an april without end
of an april lonely as a (god)

In the dark of my mind
I can see oh too fine
but there's nothing to be done
when I just can't feel the sun
and the spring time is the season of the night

4월은 잔인한 계절

햇빛이 찬란히 빛난다 해도

이 세상은 서서히 그림자 속으로

잠기는 것 같아.

 

여전히 4월의 비는 내리고

온 마을이 고통으로 가득 차게 되고

당신도 그 이유는 알지 못하지.

내가 하늘을 올려다 볼 때 ...

 

회색빛 하늘이 어디서부터 파래야 하는지를

회색빛 하늘을 어디서부터 볼 수 있는지

왜, 왜 그래야 되냐고 물어 보지만

나도 모른다고 울부짖을거야.

 

아마도 가끔씩은

가끔씩은 모든 걸 잊고 미소를 머금겠지

하지만 그 땐 끝이 없는 4월의

느낌이 다시 되살아나지

다가오는 외로운 4월의 느낌.

 

어두운 나의 마음속에서

난 모든 게 아름답게 보여

그러나 내가 태양을 느낄 수 없을 땐

아무것도 할 수 없는 것

그러므로 봄의 계절이란

어둠의 계절이라는 거야

 

회색빛 하늘이 어디서부터 파래야 하는지를

회색빛 하늘을 어디서부터 볼 수 있는지

왜, 왜 그래야 되냐고 물어 보지만

나도 모른다고 울부짖을거야.
